Welcome to the Reading Modeler!

The brakeman gives the hand signals as NMj caboose #92835 is set out on the caboose track somewhere on the Reading.

The purpose of this website is to provide an "electronic interchange" where individuals interested in model railroading and railroad history pertaining to the Reading Company and related railroads can obtain and share both prototype and model-related information. Just as cars are set out and picked up at the interchange, we hope that the content presented on the site will be dynamic as well, with new content continually being added as information is shared.

We will do our best to share information provided to us as quickly as possible; however, your patience is appreciated, as this is a volunteer labor of love in between full-time jobs, families, and our own modeling activities! Please don't be afraid to provide constructive criticism regarding the site's design or the manner in which content is organized and presented. If there's something you'd like to see included on the site, or more importantly, something you'd like to SHARE, please let us know! Our goal is to include as much information as possible that is of interest to those of you viewing the site,so please don't be shy about making your opinions known. Most of all, ENJOY the site, and THANKS for visiting!

Reading Company Cast Iron Crossing Signs Now Available!
Items For Sale

The cast iron crossing sign at Rupert, PA on the Reading's Catawissa Branch.

The Reading Modeler is happy to announce the release of our Reading Company "old style" cast-iron crossing signs in HO Scale!  Before moved toward cheaper steel crossing signs in the final years of the railroad's existence, the Reading's distinctive 50-degree crossbucks and "STOP LOOK LISTEN" signs were made from cast iron, like the road's other wayside signs.  Even though the railroad began phasing them out, they could still be seen guarding grade crossings on secondary branch lines well into the Conrail/NS era, including one example on the Reading & Northern in Leesport, PA as recently as a few years ago!

Like our wayside sign decal set, our crossing sign set will help you give your layout that true "Reading" look.  The kit includes sufficient pre-cut "laser board" sign blanks and decals to model 4 grade crossing signs, affixed to the post of your choice.  In addition to the crossbucks, the kit includes two sizes of the round "STOP LOOK LISTEN" discs, as well as a rectangular "Do Not Cross..." sign that was used at some crossings.  The kit pieces are to be affixed to a post of the modeler's choice to allow for maximum modeling flexibility - the modeler can choose to include flashers, depending on the location being modeled.  To read a review of these signs, please visit our Reviews page.

The Reading Company crossing sign kits are $4.00 each, including shipping, and are in stock and ready to ship. To order, please visit the Reading Modeler Company Store!

Survey
What's your preference for rolling stock modeling?

Give it to me ready-to-run right out of the box
I'd rather "shake the box" and put it on the track
I enjoy assembling a fairly detailed kit
I'll bash it or build it from scratch, thank you
